Looking for a probable best picture winner? Boyhood is the movie for you. The movie starts with little six-year-old Mason (Ellar Coltrane) and his older sister Samantha (Lorelei Linklater). We watch them grow up over a 12- year period. Boyhood was shot from May 2002 to October 2013. Mason and Samantha grow up living with their mother, Olivia (Patricia Arquette). She is a single mother who is having money problems and she decides to go back to school in Houston, so her and the kids have to move there. We see it all with Olivia. She is a woman who just cannot catch a break in life. Once they get to Houston, absent father, Mason Sr. (Ethan Hawke) now makes his way back into the picture to try and be a better father to his children, Mason and Samantha.
First off, I now feel old because I am only a year older than Mason and I watched him grow up. I looked back and remembered being that age and what was going on at the time. You always knew around what year it was because of the music they had playing in different scenes. The concept of Boyhood was so interesting and this film has been one that has been talked about ever since it started filming in 2002. This was a very risky move by director, Richard Linklater. He definitely pulled this one off! The idea of Boyhood is great, but watching these kids grow up in front of your eyes with the same actors is something really cool that has never been done before.
The acting in Boyhood is superb! Everyone involved in this film was excellent. It’s a shame that Ethan Hawke may not win the Oscar because I’ll tell you what, this was the role of his career! Ethan was phenomenal playing Mason and Samantha’s father. He cherished every moment with these kids the whole movie and proved that he was able to be a good father. Patricia Arquette was awesome as the single mother who had occasionally been married and dealt with terrible husbands. She still was always there for Mason and Samantha. She never let any of that stuff harm them. Whenever things started going wrong, she looked for what was their best interest.
As the movie goes on we watch Mason and Samantha get older and start to get involved with different phases of their life, from teenager to young adult. Boyhood ends with Mason becoming an adult. After watching Boyhood you feel as if you were a part of the family and they were your brother and sister. It was very important to me to see that films can be made this way. This is a whole new look to movies.
Overall, Boyhood is a film the you are going to want to watch more than once. It’s an exciting story about the way two children are raised and how they turn out in life.
Grade= A (Excellent! A Must See!)
