Obvious Child (2014)

Here’s one that’s been out for a good while that I just got around to finally seeing. Donna Stern (Jenny Slate) is hitting a very rough patch in her life right now. She is losing her job because the store she works at is closing down. She often does stand up comedy at a club, but this is not going as well as she would like it. To make matters worse, her boyfriend has decided to break up with her to be with someone he was cheating with throughout their relationship. This leaves Donna feeling totally depressed and upset. She starts to get drunk all the time and call him leaving him crying messages. This also starts to affect Donna’s stand up material and she constantly just talks about how bad her life is, but it is not funny at all. When Donna is out at a bar, she meets Max (Jake Lacy). The two of them go home together and Donna wants to get this one night stand over with. She leaves the next morning and shortly after discovers she is pregnant. Donna’s immediate thought is abortion, but she doesn’t know whether or not to tell Max. She decides to go through with not ever calling and telling Max, but he keeps showing up randomly trying to take her on dates because he has feelings for her.

This movie is very smart and very funny. Director, Gillian Robespierre gave us a movie to have a lot of fun with. This movie is not one that begs you to enjoy it, but you find yourself being very interested in the characters. Jenny Slate was awesome in this. I always thought she was funny, but she pulled off a great performance in this one. I can’t wait to see what she does next as an actress. Jenny Slate is definitely going to be taking on some more serious roles after this one.

Obvious Child is a movie that bursts with hilarity and a lot of subtle emotion. I was pretty surprised after I watched this movie. I thought it was going to be some goofy comedy, but it was much more than that. If you are not in support of abortion, that is where you will run into problems with this movie, but don’t let that bother you because the movie isn’t really about abortion. Robespierre gave us a movie that many people will enjoy. The story was very interesting and entertaining.

Obvious Child shows you that life is not always easy and a lot of things don’t go according to plan. This is a very heartfelt movie that has a lot of insight with it. There is never a dull moment in this 84 minute movie. That is also a good thing about this film. With it being short, it is not intimidating to watch all the way through. I really do think you will enjoy this movie if you give it a watch.

Overall, Obvious Child is a film that is very entertaining, funny, and has you interested throughout the whole movie. I definitely recommend giving this one a look.

Grade= B+ (Very Good!)
