Well, Lin Shaye is back for her third round of Insidious, and this time it’s even more horrifying! Let’s rewind three years prior to the Lambert case. When Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott) goes to see legendary psychic reader, Elise Rainer (Lin Shaye) in order to try to get in contact with her recently deceased mother, something follows Quinn and begins feeding off of her soul. This was a bad idea from the start because Elise told Quinn that she was unable to use her gift anymore because something happens every time she tries to reach people from a different world. Elise decided that she will try to help Quinn because she is a lost, young teenager. After Elise is taken from her body to the dark world of demonic creatures, Quinn’s father, Sean (Dermot Mulroney) finds Elise and tells her that they are desperate for help. Elise decides that this is something that she was put on this earth to do and she needs to go to the demonic darkness and find Quinn and bring back her soul. With the help of two paranormal investigators, Elise may just be able to do that.
Where to start with this one? This is now the third installment in the Insidious franchise, which is a very well-known horror franchise of this century. Similar to the first two, what you see with the third chapter of Insidious is nothing but frightening scenes piled on top of more frightening scenes. I did really like the whole story from the first and second film, but even though this movie takes places three years prior to the first two, I really liked how they went straight for scares and really didn’t make it obvious that there will be a fourth movie. I would however, really enjoy a fourth one and I think that we’ve seen enough life in this one to ensure a fourth installment in the franchise.
The acting from the third chapter of Insidious is not only believable, but Shaye and Scott make you feel like you are with them while in the darkness. Yet again, Shaye gives a performance that not only makes you frightened with every scene she is in, but she also is a very interesting character who is incredibly believable with what it is she is doing. Stefanie Scott, who I have never seen in anything else other than this movie, really showed me that she wanted to give a believable and scared performance with her role as Quinn. Watching her on-screen was a nice treat because I think she pulled it off. Sometimes with horror movies we see actresses that are not believable in the slightest bit, but Scott showed me that she was meant for these horror roles.
Insidious: Chapter 3 is definitely not my favorite story-line, but it was really nice to see how everything started coming together with Elise and the paranormal investigators. The scares and jumps that we have from this movie are more than effective, they’re perfect. I have never jumped so much from watching a movie and if that’s what the main goal was for this movie, then mission accomplished. The first two were very scary, but this third chapter gives us scares that we aren’t used to. There is no wasting time with this one because it is scary from the beginning to the end. If you lover horror movies, or just want to scare your pants off, this third installment in the Insidious franchise is one you will want to check out.
Overall, Insidious: Chapter 3 is frightening, jumpy and everything you want to see from an effective horror movie. I think this is definitely one of the more scary horror flicks in the past ten years.
