The Girl On The Train (2016)

Rachel Watson (Emily Blunt) rides on the train all day long to New York City and back. Rachel has a lot of time on her hands and she likes to spend all of her time pretty much just drinking herself to the point where she blacks out. While on the train she loves to stare at a couple, Megan (Haley Bennett) and Scott (Luke Evans), outside the train window. Things start to get crazy when Rachel see’s Megan one day with another man who isn’t her husband. To make matters worse, Megan goes missing and it looks like Rachel may be the main suspect. Why is that? Well, because Rachel’s ex-husband Tom (Justin Theroux) and his new wife live two doors down from Megan and Scott. Rachel constantly shows up drunk all the time and is extremely forgetful, so it’s easy for everybody to kind of point the finger.

When first hearing about this movie it seemed like it was going to be really cool and be an exciting thriller. Sadly, The Girl On The Train tries everything in its power to live up to the hype that 2014’s Gone Girl had. The problem with this movie is that it tried too hard to be the thriller that it was made out to be. The Girl On The Train was pretty much a disaster in my opinion. I thought the story just got way too goofy and it never really went anywhere. For most of the movie we are just seeing Rachel feel sorry for herself and make herself out to be an awful, drunken person. This movie just seemed way too desperate to actually be a solid film. For a majority of the film you pretty much just feel bored and check your watch, which is never a good thing.

The cast is actually really solid. I’ve always been a fan of the work that Emily Blunt does, but the problem here is that she should have not done this movie. Blunt was on-screen for pretty much 95 percent of the movie, but her character just became boring and nothing more. And she’s not the only one that’s the problem here. Actors like Luke Evans were even pretty bad in this. I think that’s another reason why this movie could not be saved. When hearing a movie has a solid cast I usually get very excited, like I was when I found out who was in this. The problem is that nobody could work well together and the chemistry was just not there with any of them. This is one that Blunt is going to have to put behind her career wise and move on to better things.

The whole entire time you’re watching this film and just waiting to see when something exciting is going to happen, but that moment never comes. Once you figure out the “crazy” twist that occurs, you kind of look around and say that was stupid. I thought for a while maybe if the film finished strongly then it could be a solid movie, but sadly this did not happen and we’re left with pretty much another crappy movie. Everything about this is way too dull. For a movie that comes off as such a strong thriller, there has to be some either suspenseful moments or moments that are super tense. The Girl On The Train provides none of that. This movie had a ton of promise, but fell very short of being anything that could even be memorable. This the problem when a movie tries to somewhat play copycat off a classic, like Gone Girl.

Overall, The Girl On The Train is not just a disaster from start to finish, but more importantly a waste of your time. Movies like this are one’s to avoid, and even with a solid cast this movie could not be saved. It has poor writing, directing and a storyline that never knows how to come together. This is easily one you can skip.

Sicario (2015)

After working her way up to receiving one of the highest positions in the FBI, Kate Macer (Emily Blunt) is asked to do what will be a very dangerous, but also has the chance to be an incredibly rewarding assignment. Kate is asked to do this by a very sketchy government official, Matt Graver (Josh Brolin). Kate decides to join this task force that will escalate the war against drugs. This group will be led by a very shady, but bad-ass Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro). The ultimate goal for everyone is to take down the major drug lord of Mexico. After a short amount of time into this mission, everything starts to seem really weird and something may be odd about how they are going about completing this and putting a stop to this ongoing drug war.

Sicario is probably the number one movie that I have been waiting to see this year. Knowing who the cast was and that it was directed by Denis Villeneuve, I said count me in! Sicario has turned out to easily be the best movie I have seen this year so far and I think it will be tough to beat. The whole entire movie is just two hours of absolute success for the actors, writers and director. Everything about this movie was absolutely perfect and I could not get enough of it. This is probably going to be the most jaw-dropping and entertaining movie that we will see all year. It even tells an outstanding story as well. I think this movie is an absolute masterpiece and I would love to see it get nominated for a few Oscars.

The acting is absolutely incredible and I am unsure as if we will see acting this good from any other movie this year. As in her previous movies, Emily Blunt turns out to be a pretty great actress, but she is in her right element with Sicario and she really takes you by surprise. Blunt probably gives the best performance of her career to date. Josh Brolin has always been a great actor and he really shows what he can do in this movie. The man who is really the reason why this movie will be so loved is Benicio Del Toro. I think we can all agree that he gives what it absolutely the best performance of his career and that there is no doubt he should be up for the Oscar. If he’s not, then I have no faith left in the Academy.

Sicario is said to be an action/thriller, but I definitely think it leans more towards a drama/thriller with some action in it. During this movie, some of the scenes were so tense that you could easily hear a pin drop in the theater. I don’t think I’ve ever had my heart racing so much while watching a movie. This movie is an absolute must-see. Sicario is at its best when the chills and tension are deep. This movie is quite the experience to see in theaters and I think this is where everyone should go to check it out. I definitely do not recommend waiting for the DVD release. The experience seeing this in theaters makes it that much better and I promise you will not be disappointed in the least bit.

Overall, Sicario is the best film that this year has to offer so far. With a breathtaking performance from Benicio Del Toro and two powerhouse performances from Blunt and Brolin, Sicario gives us a movie that is absolutely unbelievable and a must-see!

Into The Woods (2014)

For once, a director finally understands how to make a musical the right way! There are many stories that are involved in this movie. With every story, everybody seems to have to go into the woods. It all begins when a baker, (James Corden) along with his wife (Emily Blunt) are told by the witch (Meryl Streep) that if they want to conceive a child they need to gather up the ingredients for a potion she will cook up that will return her to her youth. When the baker and his wife agree to do this, they meet many other characters along their journey. They first meet Cinderella (Anna Kendrick). Cinderella has her whole story going on with the prince (Chris Pine). They also come across Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford) and Jack (Daniel Huttlestone). There is also a wolf (Johnny Depp) that is looking for the Little Red Riding Hood and Jack.

Into The Woods is a movie that has a great soundtrack to it. All the songs were catchy and written well. The last time a musical was done well was Les Miserables in 2012. That and Into The Woods have been the best musicals made in the past decade. Into The Woods is very much aimed at a family audience and it shows. This is your typical holiday movie that you would go to with your family. It is, however, a little longer than it needs to be, but that doesn’t bother you for the most part.

A lot of the movie is very interesting. I think the idea behind collaborating all these fairy- tales together is pretty cool. Johnny Depp did not have much screen time, but he was indeed my favorite in the movie. He stole the scene when he was portraying Mr. Wolf. The acting was overall, pretty good. Merryl Streep was exceptionally great. She’s always good in anything she is in so I can now skip over talking about her as an actress.

While Into The Woods may not be the best movie of the year, it keeps us entertained and has you humming the songs as you get done watching it. Director, Rob Marshall did a bang up job with this adaptation of Into The Woods.

Overall, Into The Woods is exciting, fun, has great songs, and can be enjoyed by the whole family. This is definitely something you want to check out if you are in the mood for a nice, happy movie.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Here’s a movie that’s been out for a while that’s awesome! An alien race has hit the earth! Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat in his life. Cage gets sent out to a war between the humans on earth and the aliens, who are known as “Mimics”. Cage has no idea how to handle himself out there. He is almost in what looks to be a suicide situation. He is battling a “Mimic” and dies, but then is suddenly alive and back where he was dropped off for combat. This is very bizarre and unbelievable to Cage. When he wakes up he knows he has been here before and when he tries to explain this to people, no one will listen. This is now getting repetitive with him waking up in the battle field, being sent out, and then being killed again. After a few times of this happening, a soldier by the name of Rita Vratasky (Emily Blunt) tells Cage to come and see her when he wakes up. So right after Cage is killed again, he goes to meet Rita and they try to come up with a plan to find the source where all the aliens are coming from. Each repeating day gets them one step closer to defeating the aliens.

Edge of Tomorrow is a movie that reminds you of Groundhog Day in a sense, but captures much more than that. This is a sci-fi movie that really captures your attention and makes you feel like this is really happening. The premise of this movie can sound a little ridiculous, but Edge of Tomorrow does not leave you thinking that way as you are watching it. This is definitely a fun action packed thrill ride that keeps you hanging on the whole time.

Each time Cage wakes up from dying, he survives a little longer, but every day it’s the same routine, where he has to convince Rita to do this because it’s as if she has no idea who he is every time he wakes up. Cruise gave a powerhouse performance with his role as Major Cage. Blunt was spot on with Rita and the two of them together were awesome. I think this is a movie that will make everyone happy about Tom Cruise. The man has not had an excellent role since Magnolia.

Edge of Tomorrow was definitely the summer movie that everyone was looking for. This was well made, loud, and undeniably a lot of fun. Definitely a movie that attracts multiple viewings. I can’t wait for the DVD or the Netflix release, so I can give this one another look.

Overall, Edge of Tomorrow supplies you with almost two hours of fun and keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. I definitely think this is one you should check out!
