La La Land (2016)

Mia (Emma Stone) is working at a coffee shop in Warner Bros. Studios and is feeling like she is a failed actress. She constantly goes to different auditions and never receives a call back. All she is hoping for is that one big break so she can land a major role. Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) is a jazz pianist who’s only dream is to one day own his own jazz club. However, jazz music seems to be becoming less and less popular, so he is kind of out of luck with this one. Sebastian spends his time playing household tunes at a local restraint where he works for tips. While playing at a restraint, he catches the eyes of Mia and the two suddenly fall for one another. While Sebastian and Mia both have huge hopes and dreams, the longer they stay together, the more they begin to fade in different directions.

Usually when I find out I am going to see a movie that is a musical I get somewhat worried because they are either hit or miss. Luckily La La Land works in every way and is pretty much a perfect movie. It is the kind of movie that is not only fun and entertaining, but as soon as the singing and dancing stops and the people start talking it is just as entertaining and exciting. La La Land is just a very happy movie, and it’s as simple as that. It is the type of movie that does not come around all that often and there is no doubt in my mind that this will be a serious contender for best picture, if it not already has the award wrapped up.

There’s a lot more to La La Land then it just being your happy musical movie. This film shows you all of the great things the world has to offer you and also the hard realities that people sometimes have to face. After watching this movie you have a lot of hope with your future life endeavors. It’s movies like this that leave a special place in your heart because it makes you feel like you can do anything you want with your life and things will work out. Director, Damien Chazelle definitely loves his jazz music and we understood that when he made Whiplash, but he takes it to a whole different level here. And what you see from Stone and Gosling is pure magic. The chemistry these two actors have together is something that I can’t wait to see again. The way their characters intervened with each other and developed with one another is something that I love when watching a movie.

As mentioned above, there is no way this movie does not get loads of Oscar nominations because it’s already killing it with Golden Globe nominations. I would not be surprised if this wins everything that it is nominated for. This is the first movie of 2016 that I have seen where I can say it was perfect. Not to mention the scoring of this film is unbelievable. The choreography, cinematography and directing are just as superb as the acting. If you are a fan of film then you will love this movie. If you are a fan of film and not musicals, you will still love this movie. Everything that Chazelle did with La La Land all fell perfectly in place and works wonders for the audience. After much time and thought about this movie, I will be incredibly shocked if it does not win Best Picture.

Overall, La La Land is the type of movie that is a must see. It delivers on everything you would want to see form a movie. With great directing, superb acting, excellent writing, and exciting songs, La La Land works in every single way and is the perfect movie of 2016. Chazelle is at the top of his form with this one.

Superbad (2007)

Here’s an older flick that I just watched again. We meet Seth and Evan (Jonah Hill and Michael Cera). They are two best friends who aren’t considered to be the cool kids in high school. The two of them are completely inseparable. Seth and Evan just want a chance to hook up with some girls and be considered as “popular.” After an invitation to what is supposed to be an awesome party, Seth and Evan are thrilled. All Seth and Evan want to do is lose their virginity and start having an awesome sex life because they are going to college soon. They have to try to score enough alcohol for the party and to get the two girls they like drunk. They really need the help from their nerdy friend, Fogell (Christopher-Mintz Plasse) aka McLovin. Fogell decided to get a fake ID that will get them all the alcohol they want. After the trip to the alcohol store goes wrong, Fogell is left hanging out with two police officers (Seth Rogen and Bill Hader). This leaves Seth and Evan out of luck to get alcohol for the party. Will Seth and Evan be able to get the alcohol and the girls?

First off, Superbad is arguably one of the funniest movies in the last ten years. It is downright filthy and you can’t get enough of it. The mouth’s on the two of these guys is ridiculous. All three of them were absolutely hysterical in this film. This is a movie with so much vulgarity and you don’t mind it because of how funny it is. The cleverly crude humor that this movie has is just unbelievable. You never stop laughing at all the things that those three have to say. This movie was made strictly for laugh’s and it wins at that. If you just want to sit down and laugh your ass off, this is definitely the movie that you will want to watch.

The casting in this was absolutely phenomenal. This movie convinced me of how funny Jonah Hill was. I thought he gave us his funniest performance out of all his roles in this. Seth, Evan, and Fogell were hysteria, but the funniest moments came when Seth Rogen and Bill Hader show  up. They left me laughing for hours to come. They have some of the best quotable lines from the movie. They were absolutely the perfect people to cast in this film. The whole concept of the two of them just hanging out with McLovin is hysterical. I loved these two together and never fail to laugh at every scene that we see with them.

The truth about Superbad is that it’s not only funny, but it tell the true story of the late teen mindset. That is something that is awesome about this film. They really hit the nail on the head with that. It is simply just something that many teenagers can relate to. The story becomes very believable. The creators did so well at capturing the awkwardness of the teenage years. This is definitely a movie that you can not help but laugh at every time you watch it and it demands multiple viewings, just not with your mother. It’s just simply a hilarious film with a great storyline.

Overall, Superbad is hilarious, dirty, sweet, and a downright comedic masterpiece. If you did not see this movie, move it to number one on your watchlist. A comedy that everyone can enjoy!

Grade= A (Excellent! A Must See!)

Birdman (2014)

Wanna watch a flick that both makes you laugh and is awesome at the same time? Birdman is the movie for you! Riggan Thomson (Michael Keton) was once the actor that you looked for in a movie. Whenever you heard his name you knew him. He was so popular from playing a superhero character in a movie by the name of “Birdman.” His fan base was huge and people knew him from all over. This “Birdman” movie was big all over and everyone loved it. Birdman takes place quite some time in the future and things are different for Riggan. He plans on making a comeback with his play on Broadway that he directs and also stars in. Riggan Thomsan thinks this play will put him back on the map and his career will skyrocket from here. Riggan has a voice in his head that continuously talks to him throughout the film that makes him do certain things that he normally wouldn’t.

As the movie opens, we first see Riggan elevating with a voice in his head talking to him. During one of the last rehearsals for his play something goes wrong with one of the actors playing a leading role. This leaves Riggan to have to quick find a replacement. He finds Mike Shiner (Edward Norton) who is outstanding in this role. Keaton and Norton had top- notch performances in Birdman. There is no shock as to why both of them are up for an Oscar this year. The two of them were just superb in this and they were just downright enjoyable to watch the whole time. Riggan hires his daughter Sam, (Emma Stone) who is an ex junkie and fresh out of rehab to be his personal assistant. Stone gives us an outstanding performance with this. Some of the best scenes of the movie are when Sam and Mike are on the roof of the the theatre together.

Riggan Thomson wants his ego back. He is either a has- been or a nobody in the world right now. He feels that this one play can make this happen for him. Keaton was given wings of “Birdman” and it makes this film irresistible. He had me laughing the whole movie. Keaton just takes us on a wild joyride of trying to retrieve his former ego.

Birdman is directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. He is an excellent director of our time and this is one of his top movies he’s made. The directing in this is phenomenal! Before I heard about all the Oscar buzz Birdman was getting, I had little interest in it. Boy was I wrong! Iñárritu decides to throw us a little something different than we are used to. His film’s pretty much consist of you just feeling bad and depressed about things. Iñárritu gives us something exciting that makes you root for Thomson throughout the film. The fact that he gave us a little change in the way he directed this film is a great change of pace for the audience. He gave us all something that is excellent and hysterical. I heard that Birdman was made differently and I think that is what made me hop on the bandwagon for it.

Overall, Birdman had a terrific cast and the direction of the film was superb. I definitely think that Birdman is an all around fun and hysterical movie. Definitely something I look forward to watching again!
