Silence (2016)

It’s 17th Century Japan and Christians are not liked. If you even closely identify yourself as a Christian or appear to be one who practices that religion, consider yourself dead. Among those who have been killed, many of them are priests who traveled from Portugal to Japan. Their goal: to spread the word of Christ while trying to help out the Japanese citizens who were secretly following the faith. Stuck over there is Father Ferraira (Liam Neeson), a mentor to the priests who are in Portugal. He is also someone who is highly respected in Catholicism. Two priests in Portugal decide they need to go to Japan to rescue Father Ferraira and bring him back home. Father Garupe and Father Rodriguez (Adam Driver and Andrew Garfield) take the trip to Japan to attempt to carry out this mission. However, as soon as they arrive they quickly discover that they are not welcome and must lay low while trying to find Father Ferraira.

For a film that Martin Scorsese has been pushing to make for nearly three decades now, all I have to say is that it’s about time. For whatever reason this movie was not being picked up by anybody and after so much time of trying, he was finally able to make it work and has created one of the more emotional films he has made in a long time. Silence will quickly become one of the better religious epics that we will see. Scorsese is someone who is very religious, so it’s understood as to why he wanted to make this movie so badly. Religion is one of his passions something that he holds very dear. Silence is a movie that is nearly three hours long, and even though it is slow-moving, it really seems to go by quickly. That is because it is so interesting and intriguing.

I believe it goes without being said that Andrew Garfield is slowly, but surely becoming one of the major names of Hollywood acting. Let’s try and forget his role as Spider-Man and focus on good roles he has done. Like 99 Homes. Garfield has truly risen to the top of his form in Silence and there could be a chance that he becomes Scorsese’s next Leo. That might be too high of praise, but the guy was definitely was unbelievable in this and I really hope there is some consideration for an Oscar nomination. I think you could almost say the same thing about Adam Driver. Although he is just starting to really expand on his acting career now that HBO’s, Girls is coming to an end, he really shines in the movies he is in. I really believe we are going to be seeing much more work from him and that is something I’m happy about.

Silence to me is easily one of the best films of the year and I hope it gets the recognition that it deserves. What else can you really expect from Scorsese? The man has been my favorite director ever since I discovered that good movies existed. It is a really dark, but powerful film that is a must-see for all movie lovers. In addition to the outstanding acting and exhilarating storyline, Silence is a movie that will never be forgotten and may be Scorsese’s best film since The Departed. The great thing about his movies is that you pretty much know what you’re getting and that is a great film. What intrigued me the most about Silence is that it will affect people in many different ways. While it may cause some controversy, I think it will actually be something that people understand no matter what religion they are. It is not the type of religious flick that caters to one audience, and that is what the most interesting thing about it is.

Overall, Silence delivers on everything that it wanted to present. This is the most passionate and emotionally powerful film that we have seen from Scorsese since The Last Temptation of Christ. This is a film I cannot praise enough and despite how long the move is, it is absolutely one that you need to see.

Grade: A

Ted 2 (2015)

Well everybody, Ted and Johnny are back in action. We fast forward a few years from the first movie and now Ted (Seth MacFarlane) and John (Mark Wahlberg) are back with full swing. Ted and Tami-Lynn (Jessica Barth) are now married. Things are really looking great for Ted, but John has a lot of problems of his own now. John has recently divorced his wife and he is really taking this hard. Ted really wants to start a family of his own and John is going to have to try to help him in every way possible. The problem is that Ted is having some serious legal issues. The government is saying that Ted is “property” and not human. Now, Ted’s marriage is annulled and he has to hire a lawyer by the name of Samantha (Amanda Seyfried). Samantha has to try to convince the jury that Ted is a human.

The first Ted is definitely one of my favorite comedies of the past ten years. I think Seth MacFarlane wanted to try something a little different and it definitely worked for him. If you are a fan of the first movie, then Ted 2 is definitely something that you are going to enjoy. In my opinion, the first movie was way better, but I am not saying that this movie was a failure by any means. I actually left this movie and really enjoyed it more than I thought. Let’s face it, it is very hard to make a remake of a comedy and have it be as good as the first one. Look at The Hangover for example. The second and third do not even compare to the greatness the first film brought us. Ted 2 is definitely still a riot that everyone will enjoy.

The acting in this movie was pretty solid overall. I thought Seth MacFarlane was as funny as ever. I am a big Family Guy fan, so I have always been a fan of MacFarlane and his work. Marky Mark was definitely a funny, but goofy character in this one. His performance was identical to the first one and I was happy with that. I thought throwing Amanda Seyfried in there was a good move. I don’t know why, but there has always been something about her that I have liked as an actress. I think she just gave a good performance that fit the part perfectly. I just think that Wahlberg and MacFarlane make a really good matchup.

Ted 2 is definitely not the best comedy that I have ever seen. It definitely had its fair share of problems, but I think if you are a fan of the crude and vulgar humor that it gives you, then you look past all that and see this movie for what it really tried to make you do: laugh your ass of! I can’t sit here and say this movie was great, but I can tell you I laughed a lot during this movie. Some people do not like the disgusting and vulgar humor, but with Ted, it is absolutely hysterical. I can say this movie disappointed me in a way, but it never left me not laughing. This is in no way an outstanding movie, but it is definitely a funny one.

Overall, Ted 2 is in no way a perfect movie by any means, but it is one that will have you laughing almost the whole time. If you are a fan of the first movie, MacFarlane, or any of that vulgar humor, Ted 2 is definitely a movie for you to check out.

A Walk Among The Tombstones (2014)

Liam Neeson is the man! Former New York Police Officer, Matthew Scudder (Liam Neeson) is a recovering alcoholic. After one of his days being on the job while drunk, a tragic event happens and we now fast froward eight years into the future where the days of drinking are far gone. He is now no longer a police officer and is doing some work as a private investigator. He receives a phone call one night about a case that someone is interested in hiring him for. The task is to find a group of serial killers who are kidnapping and killing this rich drug dealers wife and family. When big time drug dealer, Kenny Kristo (Dan Stevens) asks Scudder to take on this job he can’t pass it up. Scudder knows he can’t go at this alone so he needs to find someone to be his number 2 man. He comes across young TJ (Brian Bradley) who will help him solve the case.

A Walk Among The Tombstones is a movie that is a lot of fun and keeps you entertained throughout. The serial killers are playing a game with Scudder and he takes this role and puts on his Taken face. It’s almost like he is playing the same character in this. As he says in Taken, “I do have a very particular set of skills.” That is exactly the way Liam Neeson makes you think as you watch A Walk Among The Tombstones.

This is filled with plenty of action and is a dynamite thriller that is fun for everyone to watch. If you are a fan of Liam Neeson movies, this is one that you will want to watch. It’s filled with a lot of energy and just makes you engaged with catching these serial killers. I am a very big fan of the work Neeson does. I think he is one of the best actors out there right now who takes on some awesome roles and A Walk Among The Tombstones has been his best role since the first Taken came out.

A Walk Among The Tombstones is a movie that draws you in throughout. Before going to see this I was a little skeptical of how this would be. I had a feeling in my stomach this was going to be another shitty action movie that was just released to make money. I was dead wrong! This movie is thought-provoking and very exciting,

Overall, A Walk Among The Tombstones is a movie that if you are in for a fun experience, you’ll enjoy it. The story is pretty cool and Liam Neeson, once again is a bad ass!

The Lego Movie (2014)

Wanna watch something funny that you used to play with as a kid? The Lego Movie is what you want to see! Emmet (Chris Pratt) lives in a world that is run by the man everyone hates. He is known as President Business (Will Ferrel). These “Legos” are to wake up everyday and follow a set of instructions of how they are going about their day. Emmet is just your typical, idiotic construction worker. One day Emmet comes upon a special artifact that is known as the Piece of Resistance. He doesn’t think anything of this, but then he is picked up by a female who is definitely in resistance against the government. She is a very rebellious person. Her name is Wildstyle (Elizabeth Banks). Emmet is told that he is “the chosen one” and the fate of all humanity lies in his hands. It is up to Emmet to stop President Business.

The Lego Movie absolutely rises above mediocrity. This was directed by Phil Lord, who is known for 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street. He does know how to make a good comedy and he does just that with The Lego Movie. It was very easy to have low expectations for this movie, not only because it consists of “Legos” running around, but also the February release date when movies are pretty much just terrible. This movie had a lot of hysterical scenes. This was a comedy and action movie that is fun for everyone.

The Lego Movie is a film that is appropriate for all ages. It has a ton of adult humor in it, but also a lot for the kids. This is a movie that you will want to watch if you are in to enjoy yourself and have a lot of laughs. This is definitely a movie that was snubbed of an Oscar Nomination. This is probably better than all the nominees for Best Animated Feature. This movie was filled with lots of action and had an unbelievable cast. Every character was voiced by a big time actor or actress. We heard the voice of Liam Neeson, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Morgan Freeman, Charlie Day, and Alison Brie. There were much more as well.

This is a movie that really steers towards children, but almost all of the jokes are meant for adults. This was one of the funnier movies that I’ve seen as of recent. I was very into this movie while watching it. I definitely think this is a movie that you want to watch.

Overall, The Lego Movie is filled with excitement, fun, and a lot of humor. It’s absolutely the movie you want to watch one day while at home, bored.

Grade= B+ (Very Good!)
